Conversation: “How Did the Partisans Win?”

The conversation is prompted by A Sea of Blood: The Military History of the Yugoslav Partisan Movement 1941–1945, a comprehensive monograph by Sarajevo-based historian Gaj Trifković that takes a scholarly look at the events and actors of the Second World War. Since the breakup of Yugoslavia, historians have largely focused on the defeated movements, often from a revisionist perspective, while topics related to the Partisan movement have remained outside the focus of professional historiography.

Gaj Trifković returns to these questions through research based largely on previously unused German documents. Drawing on extensive archival material, the author offers new insights into the Partisan movement as well as the defeated forces, while re-examining myths that continue to shape our understanding of the Second World War.

Historian Hrvoje Klasić and historian Dubravka Stojanović will join the author in a discussion of these and other contested questions. The conversation will address controversies that continue to deeply divide post-Yugoslav societies and states, with the aim of presenting the audience with new, research-based perspectives on this complex period.
