May 20, 2026 at 7 PM
The Museum of the Nineties is organizing a presentation of the book “Brzina mraka” The Political Activity of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1989 to 1996 by historian Edin Omerčić (Institute for History in Sarajevo). .
The book examines the role of the Serbian Orthodox Church during the pivotal years of the Yugoslav crisis and the wars of the 1990s, with a particular focus on the relationship between religion, politics, and memory culture. At the center of the author’s research is the way reinterpretations of the Second World War contributed to the mythologization of the past and the transformation of social values in accordance with dominant nationalist ideologies.
One of the key questions the book raises is whether such political activity led to a return to faith, or whether faith itself was marginalized in favor of ideological goals.
