The project brings together photographs taken during the Siege of Sarajevo between 1992 and 1996 by some of the world’s most prominent war photojournalists.

On May 3, 1995, Džemil and his younger brother Amel were playing outside when a sniper opened fire on them. Amel was killed at just 16 years old, an event that irrevocably changed Džemil’s life. Years later, Džemil reached out to international photojournalists who had documented the siege and photographed hundreds of children, including Amel. What began as a personal effort to preserve his brother’s memory grew into a project dedicated to collective remembrance.

The film follows Džemil’s story alongside those of people who chose humanity in times of violence and destruction, moving beyond ethnic identities and political ideologies. Through their experiences, it explores art, cinema, music and culture as forms of spiritual resistance, as well as the ways personal grief can be transformed into remembrance, action and responsibility towards future generations.

Although rooted in Sarajevo, the film speaks to the present. It reminds us that violence may change across time and place, but its consequences remain profoundly human. At its heart are children trying to make sense of war and adults seeking to turn their experiences into testimony and responsibility.

The film is dedicated to Amel Hodžić, who loved drawing and dreamed of becoming an artist, and to all children who continue to dream despite war.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with the filmmakers.

Tickets cost 300 RSD and are available at the Museum of the Nineties daily from 10 AM to 8 PM.
