As part of the series \u201cIn the Labyrinth”, on Saturday, February 28, at 7P PM a discussion titled <\/span>\u201cIs There a Way Out of the Past? \u2013 Conflicting Memories and the Struggle for the Future\u201d will take place. <\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The states that emerged after the breakup of Yugoslavia are sinking ever deeper into the past. Instead of turning toward the present, they remain trapped in historical narratives that political elites continuously abuse. Maintaining tensions and conflicts is often based precisely on manipulating the past, as it most easily provokes strong emotions and blurs our view of reality. <\/span><\/p>\n

The discussion will address the normalization of Usta\u0161a ideology in Croatia, the revitalization of Chetnik ideology in Montenegro, memory wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the return of Macedonia to antiquity, as well as the victory of collaborationist narratives in Serbia. Participants will also consider possible ways for societies to resist dark historical revisionism and find a way out of the vicious circle of the past. <\/span><\/p>\n
