The black-and-white images he captured form a visual archive of a traumatic era\, the harsh everyday life filled with fear and uncertainty that the residents of Sarajevo endured throughout the years of destruction of their city. These photographs are not only testimony to devastation and loss\, but also to hope\, dignity\, and the invisible gestures of solidarity that held the community together. \nMario Boccia is a photojournalist and author of reports on global issues\, as well as articles and photographs published in numerous Italian media outlets. For twenty years he worked in areas affected by war and poverty across Europe\, Africa\, Latin America\, and the Middle East\, striving to find traces of hope even in the bleakest situations. He was a correspondent and reporter for the Italian daily il Manifesto from Sarajevo\, Belgrade\, Pristina\, Skopje\, Diyarbakır\, and Baghdad. His photographs have been used to promote solidarity campaigns by many NGOs\, non-profit organizations\, and the United Nations. \nThe exhibition is curated by Museo Storico Italiano della Guerra and Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa. \nThe exhibition Sarajevo 1992–1996 / The Longest Siege will open on December 8 at 7:00 PM at M90 and will run until February 8\, 2026\, daily 10am – 8pm. The exhibition is the continuation of a long-term research project dedicated to exploring and presenting alternative perspectives on the turbulent decade of the 1990s in the former Yugoslavia. Through six thematic sections\, it introduces audiences to stories of non-compliance\, resistance\, and civic courage. \nAt a time when war\, hatred\, poverty\, and violence shaped the daily lives of millions\, there were individuals\, collectives\, and organizations who chose not to remain silent—they chose resistance. The exhibition The Nineties: From Dissent to Resistance\, presented three decades after the end of the wars\, pays tribute to those who stood against nationalism\, war\, repression\, and injustice\, often at great personal risk. \nA significant segment of the exhibition is dedicated to independent and anti-war media\, both print and electronic\, which played a crucial role in exposing propaganda and reporting on war crimes and authoritarian regimes. The exhibition also explores art as a space of resistance\, highlighting how artists used performance\, photography\, music\, and film to challenge dominant political and ideological narratives. In addition\, the exhibition presents protests\, civic initiatives\, and everyday forms of resistance organized across the former Yugoslavia\, including often invisible yet courageous individual acts of solidarity\, assistance\, and refusal to participate in violence. A central feature of the exhibition is the Wall of Heroes\, an homage to individuals who demonstrated exceptional civic courage\, including Srđan Aleksić\, Nedjeljko Galić\, Goran Čengić\, Vladimir Barović\, and others. A particularly moving section\, Goranka’s Niche\, is dedicated to Goranka Matić\, an outstanding photographer and chronicler of social change during the 1990s. \nThe exhibition The Nineties: From Dissent to Resistance will be open until January 10\, 2026\, at the Požarevac Cultural Center (Jovana Šerbanovića 1)\, daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. \nThis exhibition emerged from the Museum of the Nineties initiative\,which has previously presented acclaimed exhibitions in Belgrade\, Sarajevo\, and Podgorica. These packages were prepared and packed in Belgrade\, and sent to Sarajevo through very complicated and risky ways with the help of the organization “Adra.” There also will be discussions about visits to Sarajevo\, which began as early as April 1995\, during the siege. These meetings and the aid that was sent could not help the citizens of Sarajevo much\, as they lacked food\, water\, electricity and medicine. Senad’s unwavering commitment to restoring the neglected track reflects his struggle to secure a future for the boys in a country burdened with one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the world. \nThe soul of this story lies in its heartfelt\, sometimes humorous portrayal of friends striving for a better life amidst rekindled nationalism and political corruption. Drawing parallels to today’s global conflicts\, the story follows the boys’ diverging paths as they navigate a world still marked by the atrocities of the 1990s.
